Committee Biographies
Lia Bezerra
Lia Bezerra is an associate urban designer and planner at Broadway Malyan and a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. Her doctorate is concentrated in spatial development with an emphasis on density analysis. Lia has experience in large-scale development projects in Brazil, Tanzania, Europe and the Middle East. She has worked with and developed GIS-based solutions for master planning and urban design for over 9 years. She holds a master's in regional, urban and environmental planning from the Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy, and a Geoprocessing post-graduate diploma from the Institute of Geosciences from the University of Brasilia, Brazil. She is also a chartered member of the Brazilian Council of Architecture and Urbanism (CAU). She continuously teaches master-level courses focused on the uses of GIS, new technologies and data for urban-scale projects at the Architecture for the Society of Knowledge Master’s program at the Warsaw University of Technology, Poland and at the Paris-Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Benjamin Casper
Benjamin Casper is an architect and urban planner and graduated at RWTH Aachen as Dipl.-Ing. After a year-long research stay in Bangkok in 2001/2002 he studied on various urban questions of Bangkok and received an award of the Stiftung Deutscher Architekten for his thesis on “The Shophouse in Bangkok”. Currently, he is working on his PhD at the Graduate School of Geosciences (GSGS) of the University of Cologne, combining geographical research with an urban architectural background. He focuses on the architectural, urban morphological and urban planning issues of an amphibian living space of the canals in Bangkok. He approaches the water-land nexus with an anthropocentric perspective and uses the concepts of spatial resilience and urban morphology to investigate the socio-spatial transformability of urban waterscapes.
Richard Coutts
Richard is a Chartered Architect with over 15 years experience. Richard has a master’s degree in daylighting and PV technology from Sheffield University and has a particular interest in renewable energy, sustainability and low carbon design. Richard is also a professional illustrator. Richard has directed projects such as the Eiland Veur Lent and Nijmegen, a new ‘eco-leisure’ destination in The Netherlands; the Waterspace Strategy for UNESCO World Heritage Site – Liverpool South Docks and an array of high quality one-off architectural projects for private clients and one-off memorials for Her Majesties Royal Marines. Richard formerly worked for Sir Terry Farrell & Partners and Dr. Ken Yeang in Malaysia and Australia, including working as resident site architect for Guthrie Pavilion – Winner of Aga Kahn Best Building in Asia 2000.
Elizabeth English
Dr. Elizabeth English is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. She was formerly Associate Professor - Research at the LSU Hurricane Center. Her experience in education, practice, teaching and research is in both the fields of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Dr. English is the founder and and director of the Buoyant Foundation Project, a not-for-profit organization based in Louisiana and Ontario that works on the development of amphibious foundation sustems as a flood mitigation strategy that supports the preservation of traditional housing forms and cultural practices. Current projects focus on the needs of vulnerable low-income communities in south Louisiana, northern Canada, and Jamaica.
Dr. English holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and Urban Planning from Princeton University, a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institution of Technology, and a PhD in Architectural Theory from the University of Pennsylvania.
Scott Holcombe
A resident of New York City, Scott Holcombe has been in the U.S. real estate market for 40 years. He has originated, underwritten and closed several billion dollars of commercial real estate loans with Merrill Lynch, GE Capital, Bank of America, Bank of New York/Mellon and JP Morgan Chase. He has a dozen years of mortgage workout experience; ten years of experience with acquisitions and development as a partner at Jones Lang LaSalle and head of real estate investment advisory services at Credit Agricole; plus he has personally completed four successful development projects. Scott holds an undergraduate degree from Beloit College (Wisconsin), an MBA degree from the Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh and has taught five semesters in the Diploma Program of the Schack Institute of Real Estate, New York University. He has been a U.S. Naval Officer and a Carrier Fighter Pilot. He has served as an ordained Deacon, Trustee and Elder with several major churches and has been the chairperson of an 8-committee city and world outreach program to serve the needy. For several years under Urban Waterfront Advisors, Inc., Scott has passionately worked full time networking and interacting around the world with participants involved with floating and amphibious projects.
Anna Januchta-Szostak
Dr. hab. in architectural engineering, associate profesor at the Poznań University of Technology, closely affiliated with the Department of Architecture (served as Deputy Dean of the Department in 2002-2005 and 2012-2016). Trained and worked abroad at Croonen Adviseurs b.v. in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Avans Hogeschool in Tilburg (the Netherlands). Expert in the development and shaping of urban riparian areas. Research interests include the role of water in the environment and the sustainable development of urban and public spaces, as well as storm water management.
Served as the leader of several projects and as an external expert during the international project REURIS on the revitalization of urban rivers (2009-2011), and a member of the Committee for Research on Water-related Hazards at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Advisory Board of the strategic programme ‘River in the City” in Poznań (2011-2012). Furthermore, since 2016, she has been a member of the Team for Managing the Warta River Area at the Poznań Municipal Office. Author of over 100 scientific publications, including three monographs: „Water in the public urban space. Models of rainwater and surface water management” (2011), „Poznań Waterfront – The Varta Valley. Revitalising relations with the river” (2011) and “River-friendly cities” (2019).
Fransje Hooimeijer
Fransje Hooimeijer studied Architecture (BA) at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Arts and Culture Studies (MA) at the Erasmus University (both in Rotterdam) and has worked as an independent researcher in the fields of architecture, urban design and landscape architecture since 1997. In addition to various publications and exhibits, she has done research for government and corporate clients. She received her PhD in Urbanism from the Faculty of Architecture at the Delft University of Technology in 2011 with the dissertation explaining the relation between water management and urban design. From 2009-2012, she has worked as a researcher at the TU Delft and at TNO, investigating the technology of urban development in the light of climate change and the energy transition. One of her main research topics is integrating the subsurface system into above-ground spatial development. Since 2012, she has been Assistant Professor in Environmental Design and Technology, continuing research in technical systems of urban development and transferring this knowledge to practice and master’s students of Urbanism.
Luu Thi Tang
Tang Luu has been working as a researcher at the Center for Water Management and Climate Change – Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City since 2017. She obtained her Master degree in Environmental Science, specialized in Integrated Water Management at Wageningen University, The Netherlands in 2017 and her Bachelor degree in Environmental Technology from University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi in 2009. Her research interests include risk and disaster reduction, sustainable livelihoods, trans-boundary water governance, climate change adaptation, international relations, and environmental economics. She has been involving in several projects aiming to assess the impacts of upstream activities on the downstream Mekong basin, sustainable and flood-based livelihoods, and amphibious housing for vulnerable communities in the Mekong Delta. She thinks amphibious design is a great model to adapt to flood, especially given the uncertainties induced by climate change in the future. She is enthusiastic about studying the governance aspect regarding the feasibility of upscaling the amphibious housing model, particularly to discover how the local governments and communities perceive the concept.
Ali Nekooie
Ali completed his Ph.D. in civil engineering at the University Technology Malaysia (UTM) in 2013. His Ph.D. research was on the design and using amphibious houses as a flood mitigation strategy for floodplain area in Malaysia. Currently, He is an Assistant Professor in the field of civil engineering- water resource & risk assessment at MUT. His research life started to reform from 2013 by focusing on resilience and disaster management. The concept of resilience and biosphere stewardship merging with sustainability goals for water infrastructures are targeted in his research while the amphibious system is one of the best solutions for his area of study. He also developed a drag coefficient for amphibious houses facing a riverine flood.
Nowadays, he works on amphibious infrastructures towards critical infrastructure resilience as a flood mitigation strategy while Middle-East currently challenged with climate change and flash floods.
Nguyen Hong Quan
Dr. Nguyen Hong Quan is currently an associate professor at the Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh city (VNU-HCM). He is leading a research group on socio-hydrology (as well as serving as head of R & D department) at center of Water management and Climate Change (WACC), VNU-HCM. He studied in the Netherlands (M.Sc) and Germany (PhD) and obtained expertise in environmental hydrology studies using hydraulic/hydrologic/GIS/RS/Geo-sciences modeling techniques. He has also a special interest in inter/trans-disciplinary study in solving water - related issues (e.g. saline intrusion, flood/drought, water pollution) and thus he has collaborative research networks in Vietnam and abroad.
In addition, he has been active in scientific communities e.g. serving as a member in scientific committee of several journals, conferences e.g. “Arkitekturax Visión FUA”; CIGOS 2019 Innovation for sustainable infrastructure; 4th IMA International Conference on Flood Risk; Guest editor for a special issue "Livelihood resilience to climate change in the Mekong River basin" from Journal of Agribusiness in Developing and Emerging Economies. The PI has published about 100 papers in international and national journals, conferences including 25 ISI/Scopus indexed articles.
Lucyna Nyka
Lucyna Nyka (Ph.D., D.Sc., Prof.) is a full professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Gdańsk University of Technology, and since 2016 – dean of the Faculty of Architecture. Her research interests focus on issues concerning water-related architecture and urban landscapes. She delves into historical hydrographies and processes that have been changing water landscapes in cities and regions, works on developing architectural and urban strategies for resilient cities, and investigates how the modification of the land-water boundary can foster urban renewal processes.
She is the author and co-author of many projects focused on water-sensitive urban renewal processes, e.g: .EU-founded Intensive Program ‘Bridging the City – Water in Architecture, Urban Spaces and Planning’, ‘Reclaiming the Royal Brook in GUT campus area’ - co-financed by Pomeranian Foundation for Environmental Protection and Water Management (WFOŚiGW). Since 2011 she has been a Faculty coordinator of the international CEEPUS ‘Urban Innovation Network’ programme and a visiting expert to European Workshop on Waterfront Urban Design (Lusófona University Lisbon). Currently she runs the H2020-MSCA project ‘Linking Research and Innovation on Waterfront through Technology for Excellence of Resilience to face Climate Change’, coordinated by Lusófona University.
Karolina Ostrowska-Wawryniuk
Karolina Ostrowska-Wawryniuk is a research and teaching assistant and a PhD candidate and at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. In her research she concentrates at utilizing Building Information Modeling methodology and tools for advanced architectural solutions. She developed custom solutions for BIM-designed prefabricated wooden housing as well as a series of floating apartments. She holds a master degree in architecture from the Warsaw University of Technology. She also participated in the international AEC exchange program at Stanford University (2012) and she remains an architecture tutor for the next generations of students since then. She continuously teaches bachelor- and master-level courses focused in the uses of BIM, new technologies and data for architectural design.
Łukasz Piątek
An architect, marine designer and researcher interested in the interpenetration of civil and naval architecture with special regard to floating buildings. Holds a PhD degree from the Faculty of Architecture, Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, where he works as an assistant professor, and a postgraduate degree in Naval Architecture from the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin. He is an experienced skipper and a partner in the naval architecture practice Kilson Design.
Jan Słyk
Born in Warsaw. Dean of the Faculty of Architecture WUoT. Author of 2 books, and over 40 scientific papers, editor of 3 monographs. His research and didactic activity is focused on methodology of design and IT implementation in architecture. Active, practicing architect holds full design license from 2000. Author of over 70 design projects: housing, commercial, public buildings, mainly in Warsaw.
Krystyna Solarek
Krystyna Solarek is an architect, urban planner and researcher, dealing with different aspects associated with contemporary urban development, city structure and suburbanization processes. She is a Professor at the Warsaw University of Technology, Deputy Dean for Science and the Head of the Laboratory of Theory and Urban Design at the Faculty of Architecture, licensed urban planner, member of Society of Polish Town Planners and former member of its Board, member of few expert committees for local authorities. She is a chief designer of more than 70 local and general plans, author and co-author of many urban development projects, conceptual works, studies and competitions, some of which were awarded. Her design works, expertise and research interests include also issues of sustainable water management in spatial planning (she is the co-author of the monograph and few articles on this topic).
Jason Yu
Assistant Professor at the Dept of Marine Environment and Engineering, National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He is in charged also with the steering of the Centre of Water Resources Research and director of the industry - academic collaborations of the university. He has been responsible for the development of a system of marine operational models on forecasting tide, storm surge and ocean currents in the seas around Taiwan. He has designed a cluster of coastal constructed wetlands for coastal flooding resilience and water quality management for Dapeng Bay, south Taiwan. He has been involved with several EU projects, i.e. CENAS, MMARIE, PROMISE, TROPOS.
Chris Zevenbergen
Chris Zevenbergen is a professor at the Water Engineering Department of UNESCO-IHE and at TuDelft, The Netherlands. He is also strategic advisor of the Executive Board of the Dura Vermeer Group NV and Member of the Board of the Public Private Innovation Platform Clean Tech Delta (CTD), The Netherlands. He worked as a researcher on various environmental impact assessments, product development, emission modelling, testing procedures, building codes and guidelines in the 1980s followed by 20 years international research and consultancy in environmental engineering and water management of urban systems. In the past 15 years he has accumulated extensive national and international experience with integrated approaches to manage floods in urban environments.
