TRANSPORTATION

Getting to Waterloo

By Air:

Toronto’s Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is the largest airport near Waterloo. Many airlines serving the US, Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America have direct or one-stop flights to Pearson airport, and from Pearson airport, Waterloo is an approximately one hour drive (100kms).

Ground Transportation from Pearson airport to Waterloo

Airport shuttle: Airways Transit offers an on-demand door-to-door shuttle to and from Pearson airport (terminals 1 & 3) at a cost of $94.00cdn. You can make a booking online here: https://secure.airwaystransit.com/reserve.php

Bus: Process: 1) Take the Greyhound bus service from Toronto Pearson Airport to Kitchener’s Charles St downtown main bus station which is about 5 kms from Waterloo ($14, 1 hr 45 mins, schedules here: https://www.greyhound.ca/  ), then 2) take a public bus ($3, 25 mins) from the Charles St Kitchener bus station to your conference accommodations: Inn of Waterloo:  Bus route #7 – Mainline; St. Jerome’s residences: Bus route #200 - iExpress(schedules are here: www.grt.ca/ and system map is here: http://www.grt.ca/en/schedules-maps/resources/2017-18-transit-map-KW-side-April_04.pdf ). Alternatively, take an Uber or taxi from the Charles St bus station ($15/$25 estimated)

Driving: there are many car rental companies operating out of or near to Pearson Airport (e.g. Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, etc). When booking, make sure you are clear whether the car rental company has operations inside the airport terminal vs. “offsite” (a few kilometres away from the airport). The latter may be cheaper but may also take longer to pick up/drop off your car since you will have to wait for a company shuttle bus.  Driving directions: it’s probably easiest to use a smartphone mapping/driving app such as “Google Maps”, “Waze”, etc. Then, simply enter your destination into the app and follow the instructions. Please be careful entering your destination address!

St. Jerome’s accomodations: enter “St. Jerome’s University” into Google maps/Waze

Inn of Waterloo: enter “The Inn of Waterloo” into Google maps/Waze

Navigating the University of Waterloo campus: You can use a smartphone app (Google maps/Waze) to help you get around campus, but just make sure to select the “walking” option (otherwise, the app will assume you are driving and will send you on roads rather than walking paths!). Maps of the campus are also available online at: https://uwaterloo.ca/map/

Key buildings on campus (that you can enter into your navigation app) include

St. Jerome’s University-conference venue, accommodations & cafeteria (STJ building code)

Federation Hall-conference banquet (FED building code)

Student Life Centre - convenience store, food, bubble tea, bus tickets, computer shop, information desk and bookstore, open 24hrs (SLC building code)
